When it’s time to decide on a new kitchen or bathroom counter top you’ll be faced with a decision. What material will you use? As you might guess, we would suggest using granite. As a local Calgary granite company, we know that there are good reasons for selecting granite as the material for your counter tops and we’ll explain why.
The forming of granite is an interesting process. Granite is a natural stone that is formed when magma rises into the upper levels of the earth’s crust and cools at a slow pace. When this cooling occurs, big crystals form and cause the rock to become very hard. This formation process makes granite a very durable material. Granite is able to withstand much of the daily wear and tear that occurs in a kitchen or bathroom and is known to stand up to the test of time. The material won’t scratch or burn easily. You can rest assured that your counters will look amazing for a long time.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and there is a reason that granite has become widely used in recent years. Granite comes in a vast range of styles and colors. During the formation process, granite can also develop a very unique appearance. This includes what we call veining or speckling. The patterning that occurs is what makes each piece of granite distinctive and gives it its own unmatched characteristics. We’re confident that anyone can find granite that will suit their style and preference.
If there are any two areas in your home that you want to keep particularly sanitary, they are the kitchen and bathrooms. Compared to other materials, granite doesn’t retain or harbor bacteria on its surface, making it easy to clean and maintain. If keeping a clean home is a priority, then granite is a must have.

Granite is one of the most sought after materials for kitchen and bathroom counter-tops, and for good reason! It’s one of the most beautiful natural products that can be displayed in your home or commercial space. In addition to its elegant appearance it is also one of the most durable and long lasting natural types of stone on the planet, making it a timeless investment. Granite has a variety of uses from counter tops and tile flooring to paving and building monuments.
Granite is not a particularly rare commodity, but the process involved to get granite out of the earth and made into a finished product is not easy. By the time a piece of granite makes it into your home, it has been on a long journey! It’s found in the earth’s crust, and is extracted from quarries all over the world. Using a combination of drilling and explosives, the granite is made into blocks and harvested. After a block of granite has been harvested from the quarry, it will be prepped and shipped off to be processed.
Slabbing & Polishing
The next step in the process is called slabbing. A large saw cuts the slabs into smaller pieces to prepare it for the gang saw. The gang saw is able to cut the granite much thinner, prepping pieces of granite that will be the correct thickness for counter tops and its other uses. The next step is to polish the granite. Polishing is what brings out the natural beauty and uniqueness of each individual cut. The granite is polished using abrasion and the more that it is polished, the higher the gloss of the finish.
There is a separate step for unpolished granite where the granite goes through a process called flaming. Flaming the granite causes the quartz in the granite to explode. As a result, this process gives the granite a rough surface, perfect for an item such as non-slip flooring. Next, the granite will be cut to specification so that it is ready for installation.
